What is the best construction calculator app for Android?
Published · Updated · By Sai Nath
We judged 12 Android apps on offline use, units, which of 15 trade calculators the listing names, price model and ads. No app wins every job: Construction Master Pro for feet-inch and rafters, RedX Stairs for deep stairs, Chippy Tools and MeisterCalc (ours) for a metric set.
We make MeisterCalc, so read this with that in mind. We have not run these apps on a job site. Every fact about another app comes from its own Google Play listing, App Store page or website, linked in the cell or sentence where it is stated. A listing is what the maker says. “Not stated” means the page we read does not say, not that the app lacks it. Prices come from each listing, in Play Australia dollars with the date; MeisterCalc’s price comes from Google Play in your own currency, so none is quoted here. This page is about trade calculators, not estimating, quoting or invoicing software.
How are the apps judged?
Five questions, in the order that usually decides it on site:
- Which calculators? An app that lacks the one you need is no use, however good it is. We count how many of 15 common trade calculators each listing names (the list is MeisterCalc’s own, so it favours the work we built for).
- Which units? Metric, imperial or both, and whether it works as a feet-inch-fraction keypad.
- Does it work offline? Many jobs have no signal.
- What does it cost, and how? Free, paid once or subscription, and what “free” includes. See construction calculator apps you pay for once.
- Ads, drawings and track record. Whether the listing says it has ads or draws the work, how many people use it and how it is rated.
We chose the 12 by searching Google Play for Australia, New Zealand and the UK for “construction calculator”, “carpentry calculator”, “stair calculator”, “concrete calculator”, “builder calculator”, “chippy”, “tradie calculator” and “roof pitch calculator”, and keeping the apps with real install numbers that offer a carpentry or building set. Civil-engineering and single-material apps were left out.
How do the Android construction calculator apps compare?
Each cell links to the page it comes from. Google Play shows install bands, not exact counts, and a rating only once there are enough reviews. The in-app item ranges are every item the developer sells, not a plan price.
Which of the 15 calculators does each app have?
The 15 are Stairs, Baluster Spacing, Check Square, Pitch, Decking, Equal Spacings, Running Measurements, Raked Walls, Triangles, Concrete, Dumpy Level, Gravel, Soil, Asphalt and Stud Counter.
“Named” means the listing uses a word we can match to one of MeisterCalc’s 15 calculators. A calculator that is not named is not stated, which does not mean the app lacks it: The Carpentry Calculator lists “balustrades (level and raked)” and “roofing” (listing), which may cover Baluster Spacing and Pitch, and BuildCalc calls itself a “Full Construction Master Pro emulation”. The two apps we only know as stair or roof specialists are counted by what their listings name.
Chippy Tools is the only other app whose listing names almost the whole set (14 of 15). Dumpy Level, Running Measurements and Asphalt are named by no other app we read, and Gravel and Soil only by Handyman Calculator besides Chippy Tools.
Which app suits which job?
Feet-inch-fraction keypad and rafters: Construction Master
Construction Master Pro Calc lists feet-inch-fraction entry, full metric, regular and irregular hip/valley and jack rafter keys, rafter cutting angles, compound mitres, crown angle, board feet, cost per unit, voice notes and project folders. It has 100K+ installs and 3.3 stars from 10.5K reviews on Play, and the App Store page shows 4.8 from 40K ratings (read 2026-10-28). Construction Master 5 Calc mirrors the handheld, with right-angle and rafter calculations, board feet and a paperless tape, and has 4.0 stars from 3.57K reviews. Both are subscription-led, and both are stronger than MeisterCalc on rafters, board feet and feet-inch arithmetic. BuildCalc is a paid app that calls itself a Construction Master Pro emulation, lists hip/valley and compound mitre functions, and is $34.99 on Play AU.
Roofs: RedX Roof, The Chippy Calc, The Carpentry Calculator
RedX Roof lists common, hip, valley and jack rafters, gable trusses, cut lists and 3D plans, with 100K+ installs and 3.6 stars from 843 reviews. The Chippy Calc lists rafters with plumb and seat cuts for gable and skillion, and a linear cut list. The Carpentry Calculator lists roofing. MeisterCalc has Pitch only.
Deep stairs: RedX Stairs and Stairs-X Lite
RedX Stairs lists straight, L, U, spiral and winder stairs, hip stringers and landings in 3D. Stairs-X Lite lists spiral, helical, zig-zag and landing stairs with 2D drawings, and has 1M+ installs and 4.2 stars from 6.3K reviews, free with ads. MeisterCalc’s Stairs has three modes but no landings or winders.
Estimating and paperwork: Construction Calculator A1
Construction Calculator A1 lists 500+ calculators, a bill of quantities, a cost estimator and 16 languages, with 500K+ installs. Its free tier is 5 calculations a day. MeisterCalc shares results as text or PDF and does not estimate costs.
A metric set of trade calculators: Chippy Tools or MeisterCalc
Chippy Tools and MeisterCalc cover nearly the same set in millimetres. Chippy Tools is further along: 50K+ installs, 3.9 stars from 215 reviews, an iPhone app, and its listing says “no ads ever”. Only Baluster Spacing is free there. MeisterCalc (listing) frees Concrete, Stairs and Check Square, lists a live diagram on every calculator, and has Stud Counter, which Chippy Tools does not name. Chippy Tools’ listing does not mention diagrams.
Paying once: The Carpentry Calculator, BuildCalc, MeisterCalc
The Carpentry Calculator says, in a developer reply, that its payment is one time only, and has 4.9 stars from 29 reviews. BuildCalc is paid up front. MeisterCalc has a one-time lifetime unlock beside its weekly plan, priced by Google Play in your currency. Chippy Tools says Pro is a subscription or a one-time payment. The full table is in construction calculator apps you pay for once.
Feet-inch tape maths on a small budget: Handyman Calculator
Handyman Calculator (Sudo Ezekiel) lists feet-inch-fraction tape maths, 16 calculators including a common rafter and board feet, and says it has no network code. It shows 100+ installs, and its price model is unclear (described as free, yet in-app items are shown). An unrelated app, Handyman Calculator: Ft & In, has a similar name.
Which apps work offline?
Offline is stated on the listings for Chippy Tools, The Chippy Calc, Stairs-X Lite and Construction Calculator A1; Handyman Calculator says it has no network code; MeisterCalc calculates offline. The other listings we read do not say, which does not mean they need a connection.
Which apps are on iPhone?
Construction Master Pro (on the App Store), Chippy Tools (per its site), BuildCalc (on the App Store) and RedX Stairs are on Apple devices as well. MeisterCalc is Android only, with an iPhone waitlist.
Where is MeisterCalc stronger, and where is it weaker?
MeisterCalc is an Android construction calculator for chippies, builders, framers and concreters, metric-first for Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It has 15 calculators, each with a live diagram. Concrete, Stairs and Check Square are free; the other 12 unlock with a weekly subscription (3-day free trial) or a one-time lifetime unlock. Calculations run offline.
Stronger, from the listings read: it is the only app we read that lists all 15 calculators with a live diagram on each, metric first and offline; and it has a lifetime unlock beside a weekly trial where Construction Master Pro and Construction Master 5 lead with subscriptions.
Weaker, plainly:
- No rafter, hip or valley cuts, no birdsmouths, no stair landings or winders, no board feet, no roof area, and no cut-list optimiser.
- No feet-inch keypad arithmetic. Imperial (ft/in and sixteenths) is a setting under Settings ▸ Units ▸ Default units, not a tape-maths keypad.
- Small: 100+ installs and no public rating yet on Google Play (checked on 2026-10-29), against thousands of reviews for the long-running apps.
- Android only (Android 7.0 or later). iPhone is a waitlist. The interface is English only.
- It uses the network for purchases, product analytics and crash reports, not for calculating.
Roofing and geometry calculators are planned for a later version, with no date.
What are the limits of this comparison?
- We did not install or time these apps. Everything about them is what their own pages say on the dates shown.
- The 15-calculator list is MeisterCalc’s, so it rewards an app for matching our set. It says nothing about depth: a stair specialist can beat a general app on stairs and score 1 of 15.
- Install bands, ratings and prices change. Check the listing before you pay.
- An app is a calculator, not an inspector. Rules are set by the National Construction Code (NCC), the NZ Building Code and your local council, and no app makes work compliant.
